What is Lawang Sewu ?
Lawang Sewu is a building situated in the city of Semarang, Central Java. which is the office of Spoorweg Nederlands-Indische Maatschappij (NIS). Built in 1904 and completed in 1907.
Local people call it Lawang Sewu (Java language) or it can be said with "A Thousand Doors". This is because the building has a door that is very much so difficult to calculate because it is too much, the actual door is not up to a thousand doors. The building also has many windows, so people often think of it as a door window (Lawang).
Ancient buildings and magnificent two-story, after the independence of Indonesia in 1945 is used as an office "the Department of Railways of the Republic of Indonesia (DKARI)"

Or now named by PT Kereta Api Indonesia. In addition, Lawang Sewu also been used as the "Office of Infrastructure Regional Military Command (Kodam IV / Diponegoro)", the Regional Office (Regional Office), Transportation Department of Central Java. During the struggle the building has its own historical record of events during the five-day battle in Hyderabad (October 14 to October 19 1945). This old building became the location of a great battle between youth AMKA or Railway against Kempeitai and Young Kidobutai, Japan. Therefore, the mayor of Semarang by Decision No. 650/50/1992, Including Lawang Sewu as one of 102 ancient or historic buildings in the city of Semarang that must be protected.
